Foster an Assateague horse for the holidays

Assateague Coastal Trust has announced its annual Assateague Island Foster Horse holiday gift drive for 2008. Giving the gift of a Foster Horse package, which includes a color photo of a wild and free island horse, is more and more popular every year. Hundreds of photographs are taken every year to monitor horse behavior, but only a handful are special enough to offer through the Foster Horse Program.

New youth lacrosse club forms on the Shore

With the goal of offering another option for lacrosse players in the area, a group of parents and businessmen have formed the Coastal Lacrosse Club, a new recreational lacrosse club on the shore. In its inaugural season, the Coastal Lacrosse Club will be offering league opportunities for boys and girls ages 7-14. In addition, it will be volunteering with the Ocean City Recreation Department to provide an early introduction of lacrosse skills for players picking up the sport for the first time, as well as boys and girls in grades Pre-K, K, 1 and 2.

Noel Community needs Christmas dinner donations

61st Season of live racing at Ocean Downs is under way

Opening night at Ocean Downs proved to be an exciting one as a track record was set, and a driving triple was recorded. Weather reports foresaw rain and gloomy weather for the night, but the evening only saw hints of rain as the night proved to be a perfect one to set things in motion. Peter Symanski, overall manager of Ocean Downs, envisioned a great meet to come. “Our drivers here have respect for one another, and that always leads to a safer and more pleasurable time,” he said.

Racing is just heating up at Ocean Downs

The Ocean Downs 61st season of racing is well under way, and the harness racing action has been spectacular and record breaking. Things are just heating up at the half-mile oval. Nationally known drivers are arriving from other tracks that are closing their meets, such as Harrington and Rosecroft. Jazz Funeral marks the end of summer

he 2009 Bethany Beach Jazz Funeral is a “Labor Day Farewell to Summer” Parade and Celebration that is free to the public. It will be held on Labor Day Monday, Sept. 7 with activities beginning about 5:30 p.m. on the North end of the Bethany Beach Boardwalk. The focal point of the celebration is the Funeral Procession that usually starts at the North end of the Boardwalk and slowly proceeds to the Boardwalk bandstand to the strain of such songs as “Amazing Grace” played by the talented musicians from the Dixie Cats, the Jazz Funeral Irregulars and the Downtown Dixieland Band who are all New Orleans-style Dixieland bands. The annual Bethany Beach Jazz Funeral begins with a private “Wake” at about 5 p.m. The “Solemn Procession” follows at 5:30 p.m. At the conclusion of the event, those who attend the Jazz Funeral are encouraged to enjoy the rest of the evening by dining at local restaurants in Bethany Beach. A silent auction to be held on the Friday afternoon before Labor Day is also in the works. The Bethany Beach Jazz Funeral Silent Auction is held as a kickoff to the Labor Day weekend and will benefit a local charity that will be named shortly.
